Winter brings shorter, colder, darker days but with more time indoors means more opportunities for self-care. It is the perfect time to light a candle, run a hot bath and rug up early to a movie to keep you feeling warm. We have put together some of our favourite feel-good films from the iKOU team to share with you for inspiration this Winter.

Plus iKOU essentials to follow to complete your cosy night in.

Eat, Pray, Love

“I'm a huge fan of Elizabeth Gilbert's writing, and having not been able to travel overseas the last two years made the travel experiences in this movie even more enchanting! The taste of Bali travel this movie gave me completely immersed me.

The main character is played by the lovable Julia Roberts, who leaves her life in New York behind to travel and rediscover her true self following her divorce. She discovers the nourishing comfort of travel to Italy to "eat", the power of spirituality in India to "pray" and unexpectedly the inner peace and joy in Bali.. where she once again finds love.

The movie (and book) is a great reminder that sometimes stepping away from life to explore simple pleasures and new experiences can be the most transformative way to find yourself.”

I wondered, ‘Why have I been chasing happiness my whole life when bliss
was here the entire time?
- Liz (played by Julia Roberts)

About Time

“This romantic comedy is all about love, life and time travel featuring Rachel McAdams. It is such a beautiful story of making the most of everyday and savouring the little moments.

With the discovery of a family secret to time travel the gift is used to travel back in time to try to change the past in hopes of improving the future but with it comes trials and lessons showing a beauty of life with and without time travel.”

I just try to live everyday as if I have deliberately come back to this one, to enjoy it, as if it was the final full day off my extraordinary, ordinary life
- Liz (played by Julia Roberts)

Penguin Bloom

“This film brings an inspiring message of hope and renewal when faced with a dark and challenging time. Set in the northern beaches of Australia and based on the true story of Sam Bloom in the aftermath from a horrific holiday accident that left her paralysed from the neck down, finds inspiration and emotional healing from an injured magpie taken in by her family.

The beauty of nature and the strength of human potential really shines through in this film making me feel all warm and fuzzy by the end!”

Regardless of how bad things get, compassion, friendship and support can come from the most unexpected places
- Cameron Bloom

The Intern

“It’s a feel-good movie, with a sweet message about being open to new things and learning something new. A comedy-drama that stars Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway and is about seizing an opportunity away from retirement into a senior intern for an online fashion site.

I’m going to rewatch it again tonight!.”

"You’re never wrong to do the right thing"
- Ben (played by Robert De Niro)

My Octopus Teacher

“This one is a documentary that touched my soul forever! It is a merging of a gorgeous wildlife documentary and a moving tale of a man in crisis who finds joy and purpose through immersion in nature and a remarkable relationship with a little octopus.

There are so many rich layers of interest in this movie. From the fact the man who is sharing this story is a documentary filmmaker himself, to the story of his journey to restore his wellbeing from burnout by exploring the oceanic underworld as a daily ritual (without a tank or wetsuit) where he meets a little octopus who touches his life forever.

Simply amazing true story that is guaranteed to leave you thinking about it for a long time after!”
