Do you realise- you spend an average of one third of your life in your bedroom?

Our bedrooms are a haven, the sanctuary room of our home- the place we retreat to for the healing power of calm and sleep.

While you may think you’ve created the perfect bedroom for your aesthetic needs,
have you ever thought about the things you can do to make your bedroom a place to boost your wellbeing, and quality of sleep?

There are many common things you will find in our modern bedrooms that can sabotage not only a good night’s sleep,
but also our general health.

Here’s my TOP 4 list for “detoxifying” your bedroom:

1. Digital Detox

Eliminating electronic devices from your bedroom can be game changing. The combination of the blue light, not to mention the stimulation of the mind and distraction it brings to listening to your bodies sleep signals can be incredibly disruptive to our quality of rest.

Detoxing your room from your phone also means that when you wake up in the morning you are not tempted to check your phone first thing- so you start your day by connecting with yourself.

2. Purify the air you breathe

Still using a traditional oil burner next to your bed? Did you know that almost all tealight candles are made of paraffin wax, a by-product of kerosense and a petrochemical?

Make the switch to an ultrasonic diffuser instead. It’s safe to use in the bedroom because it uses cold-steam technology to distill the pure essential oils into the air, and it even has negative-ion and air purifying benefits to take sleep quality next level.

Old mattresses can be a hidden haven for dust mites and allergens. It is recommended to replace your mattress every 7-10 years- so use the opportunity to replace it with a natural latex mattress to detox the surface you sleep on.

3. Detoxify what you absorb through your skin

As our body’s largest organ our skin is made up of tiny pores that can absorb chemicals that touch our skin, allowing them to enter our bloodstream. Think about the moisturisers and skincare products you apply to your skin before you sleep, and make the switch to natural and organic.

The colours and chemicals used in your bedding can also impact your health. Choose organic and natural fabrics to sleep in, preferably undyed. The quality of the linens you choose can make a big difference to your health and sleep quality. I love the crisp, clean feeling of pure white, organic cotton or the softness of linen.

4. Mind - detox your thoughts of worry

Create a boundary to protect your bedroom from negative thoughts. Our days can be so full that we use the night to mull over problems that rob us of our sleep. Make a conscious intention to detox your room of your worries, by doing a ‘brain dump’ before you go to bed.

Write everything down that is your to-do list for the next day and make a commitment to yourself to leave problems at the door when you enter your bedroom for sleep. If you wake in the night, remind yourself that worry is often the stories we play out in our mind that may never even happen, and that the best gift we can give ourselves is a great night’s sleep so we can see things clearly in the morning.
I invite you to bring some mindful attention to ways you can detox your bedroom, and also to introduce a sleep ritual.

Sleep is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your wellbeing!
